Had an Epiphany on Friday Night

Above is the moment it all fell into place.

There were sticky notes and Sharpies all over my kitchen, and if you were watching me I probably looked like a crazy person, muttering to herself, scribbling furiously, and hands over my head that moment when it all clicked into place.

Below is the actual epiphany, the one thing it all came down to.

I’ve had some good ideas over the years, but this one might be my most genius yet #NoDramatics

I know it makes no sense to you, but this is all I’m okay with saying for now.  You know how jinxy I am.

Stand by.

Had an Epiphany Yesterday

I write the news for the paper on Tuesdays, and wrote about the most hackable cars.

Autonet – the Most Hackable Cars

I pitch these type of stories constantly, and my editor rolls his eyes, okay most people roll their eyes at me, to which I always say “you’ll see”.

Because securing cars is going to be a huge thing soon, especially with all the internet connectivity coming to cars. Chevy is bringing WiFi to dashboards this summer.

The first time a car is breached and lights the news on fire, remember where you heard it first.

The story was well received by both industries (auto & security), then today a infosec buddy even texted me from across the country that his client just quoted it.

So my epiphany is this – I’m going to narrow in and specialize in this. Make myself really good at it. I’ve already decided I’m auto-for-life, and think I could excel in this vertical.

I already have over a year of history online writing about it, a reputation starting with the manufacturers, it brings my 2 favourite things together (cars and security), and I find it so fun. And bet I can find big cheques down the road in it too.

So I spent way too much time today investigating further, and check out my OBD2 reader courtesy of my neighbour!

Here we go guys… PUMPED.

Update on the State of Affairs

Pleased to report my brain is coming back, and my drive too, wasn’t sure when it left how long it’d be until I saw them again.

It’s been a weird 5 weeks since quitting the newspaper, but still an excellent decision. Took time to to reflect, set some hard goals with firm dates, and plot how to morph things to accomplish them. Made a spreadsheet, plus wrote it out old-school with a Sharpie on a blank page.

Some things in no specific order:

– starting to freelance, small one-off pieces here and there, with a heavy weight on the topic I said I wanted to further specialize in – auto security

– it’s been 1.5 / 4 months I planned for my savings to cover things. As of today, I have replaced 40% of that monthly income writing 25% as much as previous

– the ‘Keri on Driving’ Library is underway, soon all 160 columns will be catalogued, and a ‘Table of Contents’ created

– remember all my epiphanies? Been tracking things since, watching, and have now seen enough signs to be 100% convinced my backwards idea is going to work…

– cars are booked for weeks out

Actually, there’s been some amazing
car moments over the past couple weeks:

Tossing the all-new 2017 Jaguar XE around an autocross course.

My 2016 Chevy Trax photoshoot came out awesome.

Being drifted in a 2016 Jaguar F-TYPE.

And I revved this 2016 Pagani Huayra.

There’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes development too, emails, negotiating and talking on the phone.

Looks like this, boring.

And yup, I’m That Guy who wears a headset like that.

But hair is better since that photo, thanks Kaila! This is your best blonde yet.

Go see her too, and soon, because the year+ we’ve been working together I’ve watched her climb up quickly, so it’s best to get on her client list now – Brennen Demelo Studio  416-301-1072

kk back to building a presentation, I have 30 of these to deliver.

Hey haven’t shown you my desk in a while… I’m here right now and will take a photo, one sec…

Blog tag = desk (17)

Have a good Wednesday tomorrow!

Night night.

This Week’s Car Kicked it Over

Over the weekend I cracked a beer, then walked out to my driveway to hang out with This Week’s Car – 2015 Jaguar XJ AWD.

Far from the first time I’ve done this, but first time I’ve told you. When I lived in a condo in Toronto, I’d elevator down and sit in the drivers seat, ahh the new car smell, pushing buttons and daydreaming… “my blog is producing weekly cars, and this one hit six figures, I’m looking at $100,000 in my driveway.”

Guys it’s working… please keep reading, and I’ll keep blogging, then more cool stuff will happen like, next week we’re off on this exclusive auto trip… and remember my blog epiphany, this car week kind’ve confirmed it, so thank you Jaguar for betting on KeriBlog.com… and get ready for the biggest KB.com announcement to date.

Cheers to that.

Full review post coming soon.

It’s Thursday Night, Have a Good One

Big-night-out-city-girl here.

After I publish this, it’s onto the last draft of next week’s column, “About Funeral Processions“. Earlier this week, I spent an afternoon chatting with funeral directors, they were a surprisingly funny bunch.

This happened today – the paper added a new section to our website, Autonet.ca.

Bottom right.

“Featured Author”, and a link to my latest article, permenently above the fold, nice.

Tomorrow will conclude the first 2 weeks working at my new job. Think I’ll be ready to blog all about it by end-of-the-month.

Because blogging something, it’s like, it makes it official.  It’s hard to explain, I’ll add it to the videos-to-make list. Basically though, the message is, “the internet keeps you accountable“.

I am loving it, to be clear.

It shows in my desk dancing.

desk dancing

I hope you desk dance, too.

Dismantled the ‘sticky note epiphany‘ wall.

Documented them all, here are some.

Clockwise from top left:

  • based on last year’s study of time to successfully execute a new years resolution, it’s best to start a month early, and have a semi-rhythm happening by the end of the year
  • “insurance is the cause of so much dumbness”.  Insurance sucks the fun away
  • “put blog in music”. Might do a security post about that. It’s part of my never-ending quest to avoid the cloud.

Found this shot of me driving Nissan’s Hybrid Pathfinder, when I blogged the Nashville story yesterday.

Nice change from the grainy selfless I usually post, eh.

So grainy. Like I blogged before, I still wonder if these phone camera lenses have built-in degradation.

Counter-argument is I probably take way more photos per day, than the average user. And like, imagine the wear & tear from one car show…

Hope it’s a good Thursday Night, best night of the week.

kk I have to go write, I’ll cheers you TTYT
