Such a Nice Saturday! This is My Face!

Hi!

Finally some sun this week eh, least it came on the weekend.  Buds are out on the trees now – proof of spring.

And isn’t this parking spot confusing?

I didn’t get a ticket, , it’s on Bathhurst and Niagara, now you know.

I’m blogging here while this song is jammed in my ears, then going to kick around downtown this afternoon.

Went to a Chilean Wine Tasting at the Spoke Club Tuesday, hosted by Notable TV. They’re soon launching in multiple Canadian cities, and if you live there, go attend their events, they’re great.

There’s footage of me saying something like that, “I like these things because it’s a good crowd, no douche bags”. I probably shouldn’t go on camera after tasting wine on an empty stomach.

It’s Pam, Casie and Karly! Always good seeing you, ladies.  Here’s Casie’s (better) blog post about the event.

Then we snuck out, Irish Goodbye as she calls it.

In other news, next weekend we’re hosting CUTC – the Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference, pumped.  This crowd will like my Skynet jokes, ha.

And that’s right, thought computing!  It is the future, you heard it here first.

You’ve heard me go on and on about it over the years…. like in My 2012 Prediction and other times when I’ve blogged about Canadian company InteraXon… one of the world’s leading thought-control-computing companies.

They were at the Olympics last year, fast forward to 0:43 below and I’ll explain them a bit.

It’s UFC day!

I’ve had it in my calendar forEVER. Definitely more excited for this than yesterday’s wedding.

The best part won’t be the actual event, it’ll be the aftermath…. everyone hopped up on testosterone and adrenaline, rolling outta there thinking they’re GSP… the city’s gonna be nuts tonight.

Kay getting offline now, TTYL!

Have a great night

Happy Skynet Becomes Self-Aware Day

In Terminator movies, the military created Skynet, an artificial intelligence which becomes self-aware today, April 19 2011 at 8:11pm / 20:11.

Then it turns against the humans… carnage, mayhem etc.

The below made me literally LOL today (this Skynet thing was trending on Twitter earlier , it’s not that weird)

A few weeks back, @SkyNetOperative started following me on Twitter.  Today we engaged in a back and forth.

This is its bio (the code basically means its watching the internet, and saving it all for future use)

So I said I dropped into its computer, and took ownership of its accounts and information.

It came back with uh-huh, I just kicked you off the server, undid your changes and copied your hard drive to a USB key.

Note it knows what kind of computer I’m on.

I replied by making it its own account.

I’m Going to Start Bolding More Things

Think I’m going to start writing in bold more. I think I’ll start with this post.

Had a great weekend. Went to a favourite bar Friday, The Barking Fish, which I’ve mentioned I’m trying to rank in Google for.   58 Beech Avenue Cambridge, Ontario 519-658-4451

That’s Tammy, who you should tip well because she’s awesome.

Woke up in suburbia yesterday, which I like because like, I do not own a shovel. Garbage day is every day. It’s different.

Went walking in the afternoon and dinner out, hung out with the girls, and didn’t touch my computer or phone last night once, it was nice.

Picked up these in a vintage shop… Stella McCartney for Adidas with the tags still on, in my colour for $17 come ON.

I always forget how much I’m online until I’m around places and people who aren’t at all as much, this usually happens outside the tech city bubble I live in. I have a Just a Minute video coming together in my head about that.

Have been really liking wearing a watch again, it’s been years.

Did music reasearch for the next video I’m going to edit, ‘The Imperical Sand Dunes of Star Wars‘ (working title). If you don’t edit you may not know that music for your videos is a real pain, because it has to be royalty free, which is not free, and YouTube music fingerprints everything it uploads, you have to be careful.

Been making lots of notes for my upcoming speech. Still leaning towards no slides.

Also this week I submitted a word to Urban Dictionary, “Gigilalaclick here, and I stumped Scribblenauts with the word ‘blog’, and that’s my new profile picture.

Sunday cleaning included re-adhering my front hall mat, ha – This is My Hack.

Night walk.

A Cool Conference

A total success according to me, because I learned a LOT. I’ve been to many conferences over the years, and to be honest they’re mostly meh… keynotes full of hot air and pontificating while the “networking you’ll do!” being sold as the best part. Not the Art of Marketing.

Gary Vaynerchuk was great of course; you already know how I feel about him.

Above that’s Jeffrey Hayzlett CMO of Kodak.  Get this… 15 years ago Kodak sold $15 billion in film, last year they sold $200 million… woah, I know. He was great because he brought old school business sensibilities to the online world, and with relish at that.

By far though, my favourite was the Avinash Kaushik’s analytics talk, because FINALLY I heard someone of authority say what I’ve been saying for years… [paraphrased]

… it’s not the amount of hits and visitors you receive, it’s the level of                    engagement that matters.

I’ve been saying this since 1999, because let’s be real – if you want hits, oh I’ll get them for you…. by doing a shady deal and buying thousands of views for pennies. But how will that help you or I? It won’t; all it will do is screw up our analytics.

The rule-of-thumb online is: for every 1 comment there are 20 visitors who were there but didn’t say anything.

And so wit: these are the stats for my video, Let’s have a Staring Contest shortly after I posted it and before I put the link out anywhere…. so these are pure numbers here:

21 views, 5 comments, 2 likes…. that’s approximately 25% which is 20% higher than the average 5%.

Not bad not bad. Quality over quantity.

And now this will be a post I send to potential sponsors and advertisers.

Thanks again for inviting me, Art Of Marketing!
