The Rarest Books in Canada

Finally made it inside. It’s been on my list every year during ‘Doors Open Toronto’, and 4 years later, tada!

It’s the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, inside the University of Toronto.

6 floors housing 700,000 books and 3,000 metres of manuscripts. It’s the largest collection of rare books and manuscripts in Canada.

Some of their best books:

  • Darwin’s proof copy of ‘On the Origin of Spiecies’
  • Egyptian manuscript fragments
  • An original copy of Shakespeare’s ‘First Folio‘ (one book containing all his plays)

How it works:

You tell them what you’d like to read, and they retrieve it for you (only librarians go into the shelves, the “stacks”).

You’ll meet up in the ‘Reading Room’, and be under constant supervision.

I asked them: do I wear gloves when handling the books?

Nope, and I quote, “We are a library, not a museum”. I like that.

I worked in a library for years. I had the dewey decimal system memorized to 5 places.

I have a Books category here on KeriBlog.

Here’s the best part: people like us, normal public non-university people, can come and read the books.

Address: 120 St. George Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 1A5

Here’s their catalogue.

Laundry Takes You Places

Spent the morning at the laundromat. Living on the road, you end up in places you’d otherwise not.

When I pulled in, see those guys standing there?

They all waved and yelled at me, real motivated. I smiled back. Always smile, even if you are unsure what’s happening. Keep your face pleasant. That’s your security tip of today.

I put my clothes in, then went back outside to watch. Ahhhhh got it, they’re day labourers.

Basically I could drive up, say “Get in let’s go!” and in they get. Now I have a car full of willing workers.

I should return tomorrow, “hey, any of you know how to video edit? Final Cut?”

Settled in with my book.

It’s the last in Queen & Country series, ‘The Last Run‘ by my top 3 favourite authors right now, Greg Rucka, and starring spy Tara Chace.

Debated playing pool, because by now the guys outside have moved inside to the tables. I’m watching with my peripheral… there’s a good chance I’ll win, but then I’d have to talk… nah.

Then I made this animated gif, it’s a Flixel.

So cool, eh?! Even cooler – it was made in Toronto, and it’s really taking off. Get it here.

And now I’m home, well, my home for one week.

Gotta run! I have email to catch up on and a city to drive around.

KeriBlog's Last Minute Christmas Gift Guide

Don’t feel bad if you’re not finished your Christmas shopping, you’re in good company…

1/3 of purchases are made 10 days before Christmas

Let’s go left to right.

The book: Concierge Confidential: The Gloves Come Off—and the Secrets Come Out! Tales from the Man Who Serves Millionaires, Moguls, and Madmen

Who doesn’t like hearing stories about rich people behaving badly? Michael is New York’s premiere concierge, and has been for years.

I met him at a fancy dinner Amex invited me to in the fall. See me ruling the roost at the head of the table? Nah, I’m just being dramatic.

I inhaled this book, the best part was learning his tricks to getting the impossible accomplished… he’s quite the social engineer really, hat tip Michael!

A fancy USB key.

It’s from Swarovski, you can find them in any mall, and everyone has a use for a USB key… functional and fashionable always makes for a good gift.

Snoxin deletes your wrinkles. Really.

I wouldn’t have believed it either, but after receiving some at a blog event I ran a test, and stuff actually works.

It’s filled with peptides, the stuff that puffs your skin back up, and has the most you can legally put in a product. It’s a Canadian company, and here’s the best part, you can find it at Shoppers, easy.

And if none of these appeal to you, showing up with fresh flowers works too. Just don’t show up empty handed, that’s bad form.

FULL DISCLOSURE – I was introduced to these products through my blog, but I am not being paid by any of these companies, I just genuinely like this stuff. I probably won’t even tell them I did this, I’m a bad blogger that way.

I Hope You Know General Hillier

He’s Canada’s best ever General, and former Chief of Defence Staff – the Canadian Forces highest rank.

I’m not fangirling here, that’s his repuation.  Ask a soldier, that’s how you know.

And given it was Canada Day Weekend, this seems fitting.

I was invited to the Art Of Leadership conference, see the full set of speakers here, you’ll know some. I’ve said before – they’re quality conferences.

I’ve attended many conferences over the years, one time I went to Internet World 1999.  Imagine something called that happening today?  Ha.

Not surprising is whom I worked my day around, having only time to see one speaker ;)

Meet General Rick Hillier at his website here, and watch him on The Hour here.  Read a good article about his accomplishments and mode of operation here.

He spoke about leadership, and enamoured the crowd.  You’d be too, he is magnetic.

Know what’s weird?  I took copious notes throughout… and they’re gone.  I’d emailed them to myself, I don’t even know how that’s possible.

‘Leadership’ by General Rick Hillier

Thanks for having me, Art of Leadership!

I’ll leave you with this:

Thank you Canadian Forces, for doing a job I could not, so I’m free and safe to skip around Canada having a blog and making videos and doing as I please.

I Haven't Talked Since Friday

Right now it’s Sunday 4pm.

I was last heard from Friday at 5:30pm, and have been silent ever since.

Tweeted this Saturday, because it was true.

Nothing horrible happened to me, I’m okay.

I wouldn’t call it the best week I ever had, and it was maybe my worst Summer Solstice, the ‘getting paid to blog’ scenario has me exasperated….. I don’t know, just felt like being quiet and daydreaming and imagining a lot, so I did.

I went for a Morning Drive both days.

Finished two books.

Queen and Country by Greg Rucka
Fatal System Error by Joseph Menn

Thought deeply. Which means I sat a lot with my hand over my mouth, that’s my thinking position.  Made tons of notes.

Staying like this till I wake up tomorrow, then it’s back to normal, ttythen :)
