The Mystery of the Checkered Flag

A worldwide recognized pattern, but…  its internet footprint is surprisingly small,  merchandise bearing the pattern it is very tough to buy, there’s a cloudy origins story and little research done to clarify things.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Guys I found a hole in the internet. Why does such a pervasive recognized pattern have such a small footprint?

Also ha that’s my scarf that got printed.

LinkedIn Invites are Great for Spreading Malware

Fake LinkedIn invitations are one of the most effective methods of getting a human to click a malicious link.

This type of attack, a phishing attack (or a more targeted, spear phishing attack) works because who doesn’t want to increase their LinkedIn number up to that magical 500+. Plus, LinkedIn is maybe the most reputable of all the social media networks, so that reputation is exploited.

Additionally, LinkedIn is a business-oriented social media site, therefore, most use occurs on a computer attached to a corporate network.  And that’s more valuable to a thief than a lone, personal computer.

The Attack

You receive an email, “Let’s connect!”

It looks like a real, and safe, LinkedIn invitation.

Click on “View Profile” > goes to a fake site > where a virus / malware / etc is waiting >  that’s then installed onto your computer > now the attacker has a way into your machine > and potentially the corporate network it’s attached to.

The Defence

I rely on 2 things – my gut, and LinkedIn’s security (note this method is not 100% fail-safe.)

1 – hmm, I have never heard of this human, and something about the name / company makes my gut say wait….

2 – I open a new browser, go to LinkedIn > Invitations > is the same name on my list there?

If yes: click around to verify identity, check for connections in common, and lots of Googling.

If no: delete the email

Don’t be shy to ask for more clarification, proof of identity, reply with “do I know you, and how?”

And always listen to your gut, the best defence against social engineering

The Biggest Abacus I’ve Ever Seen

Abacus – a primitive calculator.

Used for thousands of years. Still in use in parts of Asia, Africa. A skilled abacus operator is often faster than someone using an electronic calculator.

Spotted in Kentucky.

I’m Bad at Business Cards

I’m horrible at handing them out, clearly.  I’m horrible at telling anyone about this blog actually. I know people for years, and they have no idea I publish this. Yes I see the irony.

And since they’re so old, I feel silly handing out a card with a much younger face; I’m not a real estate agent.

So I documented them, above.

Then shredded the whole box.

Then ordered some new ones via Moo.com. They send you 10 free ones, to test.

Good ad program, because I’ll probably use Moo to order a new set. Nice thick card stock.

My dream is to have cards so thick, that if you threw them against drywall, they’d stick out.

Last Week was a Whirlwind that Isn’t Over

Flew home Saturday.

I love airports. Have a half-drafted post why. Blog category = Airports.

My plane landed 20 minutes early, then through customs in maybe my fastest time ever…. all to sit traffic. First gear and 90 minutes to get home. Traffic is ruining Toronto.

I was so wiped. So I cheersed myself for getting coverage for 3 outlets on 1 trip, then didn’t see 9pm.

It was great trip. Kentucky has fun and windy roads, and we lucked out with the best weather in weeks.

This is what I was testing – Chrylser’s all-new 200.

They did a great job, my review will be live soon on Autonet.

The newspaper recently changed the deadline structure for car launches, and it’s no longer a week, but due this morning. And reviews still take me forever, 8 hours anyway. I have another half-drafted post why (short answer: dispensing advice on how to spend $35,000 is serious).

Filmed a video too, that footage will get edited this week. Below is a still.

Beep beep I’m driving here.

Tomorrow is Car Swap Day, it’s a Ford Fusion this week. And to write the news, 2 meetings, oh Mondays are always so fast-forward eh.

Took a hockey game break tonight.

Replaced my broken hat.

And I have to get back to photo editing now, TTYL
