When Hiring a Car Service

I liked this column.

From choosing the make and model, to tipping the driver, and how to make a proper exit – the entire reason for hiring the vehicle.

Favourite line:

Regardless of vehicle choice, it all comes down to your exit from the car – the one moment for which you went to all this trouble.

That’s a hard no to hiring one of these:

There’s 100+ Computers in a Car

There are more than 100+ computers (ECUs) in a new luxury vehicle.

Millions more lines of code than a fighter jet, than Facebook even; and up to 20% of the total vehicle cost is for the computers. It runs on the CAN bus network, learn more here.

Favourite line:

Some luxury vehicles contain as many as 100 individual computers.

And:

It takes up to 100 million lines of software code to make this happen.  To illustrate the complexity, consider that an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter operates on 1.7 million lines.

Neat photo, eh.

It’s a test of all the computers and software inside a Cadillac.

1 Driver’s Test every 64 years?!

It’s odd to me, that with arguably one of the most dangerous things we all do, we’re tested once when we’re 16, then not again until we’re 80… that’s a 64-year spread?!

About Matte Paint Jobs

Matte paint is en vogue right now. Looks great, but it’s high maintenance because it’s a porous paint.

But it does broadcast the driver has a disposable income, to both purchase and maintain it.

 Favourite line:

The car can only be washed by hand ,… and never again can the car be run through an automatic wash.

Below is BMW’s ‘Frozen’ paint.

So pretty, no touching.

Very few manufacturers offer a matte paint option. Mercedes also does a beautiful job.

And so does Hyundai!

The only manufacturer to offer a matte paint on a non-luxury car.

Available on the Veloster for $800-ish; that’s thousands less than the ones you see above.

I’m Not a Fan of Hybrids, Part 2

I didn’t mean for this to become a 3 part series.

But I am asked about eco cars maybe more than anything else, and I wanted one link I can send in answer.

Why don’t I hear more about the mind-set eco driving requires?

Read it online here.

Favourite line:

And that’s my biggest problem, because to properly eco-drive and make use of the technology requires and almost 100% presence-of-mind, something I’m not sure a lot of us have.

Read Part 1 here.

And also, I’ve designed the Keri Eco Car

At least this hybrid looks good – the Lexus LF-LC Concept rear-wheel drive Hybrid.
