Hope Your Wednesday Was Productive Too

There’s only 7 of them left this year.

Today was not a lot of writing, but the admin work that supports the writing, so check check & check, thesis’ and interviews set up for the next 2 columns, think I got something off the ground I think you’ll like, and I had to go … downtown.  I know. I’ve returned maybe 6 times? Country girl convert.

Here’s me right now:

The posts are drafted, but don’t have the hour the photos take in me right now, tomorrow, night TTYT

Remembering Remembrance Day

You don’t have to support why our troops are wherever,

but you do have to support that they are.

We live in the the world’s most peaceful country, that doesn’t just happen.

Thank you to those who made and make it so.

There is No Defence Against This

This is Bob, and he’s quite nice.

He also has earned the nickname, “Toughest Guy in NASCAR”.

We are complete opposites – him a foot and a half taller, and 2.5 times heavier.

So if Bob and I were to fight,
it wouldn’t really be one.

His fist is the size of my head.

Only defence I have after it hits me, is to spit my teeth at him before running away.

(technically my brain and words could be a defence, or my ‘run up the chest knee to the jaw’ move, but for the most part, the title is accurate.)

3 – 6% of your IT Budget = Security

About 3 – 6% of your annaul IT budget should be allocated to security.

That’s the finding of the 2014 TELUS-Rotman IT Security Study. Which also found that spending more didn’t necessarily equate to better security. Spending less is an obviously bad idea.

Unfortuantely, the security budget is usually the first thing to get cut.  Which makes no sense, because why bother building something, if you’re not going to protect it?

Moreover, as a small business owner you have a responsibility to protect your customer’s information, especially if you’re processing credit card numbers.

How much are you currently spending?

Compare yourself to the rest of Canada:

About 30% of organizations spend the minimum, I hope you’re higher than that.

Protect your kingdom guys!

Because always remember,
it’s not IF you’re breached, it’s WHEN.

This is an excerpt from my interview with Hernan Barros, Directory of Security Solutions at TELUS, and Walid Hejazi, Associate Professor, Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, about their new study, the 2014 TELUS-Rotman IT Security Study.

More about that here.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell is the New Thing

Hydrogen Fuel Cells are the newest source of power for all-electric cars.

Already used in factories and space, the fuel source’s attributes read like a dream list.

I speak with Hyundai about it, because their hydrogen-powered Tucson SUV was the first-to-market.

Read it online at Autonet.ca

Favourite line:

Think I did a good job explaining something complicated:

In science-speak, electricity is released during the chemical reaction caused by combining two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule. That electricity is fed into a battery, which then powers the electric motor. When two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen are mixed, H20 (water) is created, which is what is emitted from the tailpipe, and why it’s considered a zero-emissions engine.

The problem is a lack of fuel-delivery infrastructure.  Because when did you last see a hydrogen refuelling station?  Exactly.
