I’m Part of the 0.0002%

I kept my last name off the internet for 5 years.

This is my Google+ account – KeriBlog.

It’s been suspended since I got it;
they don’t like my last name, “Blog”.

So I wrote to them saying noooo.

Hours later Google replied I was right.

Now here’s the interesting part.

There is very little information online to guide you, because this issue is so rare.

This article from TechCrunch sums it up:

0.1% of 50 million users submit name appeals,

20% of that is like me.

Let’s do the math on that…

Conclusion:

I’m part of the 0.0002% or 1 / 10,000

It’s not without issue though… because of this rarity, I end up with problems that are not documented and likely few have.

For example: my Picasa photo uploader stopped working for no reason two weeks ago. Which I almost had a meltdown over; that’s like a carpenter’s hammer vanishing. The worst part is there’s nothing I can do about it.

Being a spy is a lot of extra ugh.

Regardless of everything though, ha!

Because if Google says it’s true,
it’s true, right?

About Installing My New Blog Theme

Things are looking sharp around here at KeriBlog eh?!! :D

Be mindful of the two potential security holes in your website:

1 – Always update your theme, and to get your theme from a company that will provide updates
2 – Your log-in name and author name are likely the same, so don’t display it by the “posted by”

What installing a new theme looks like:

Next up: making my sidebar amazing. I have a list on paper here.

Pumped.

New Blog Theme Coming Soon

Plain, simple, white & blue KeriBlog… 2010 – 2012… RIP

I’m going to miss it!

I like my plain everything, it’s how I think websites should look like: blue links, obvious navigation, brain-dead layout, not trying to re-invent the wheel, content highlighted above all else, plus I’m obsessed with load time. I’m so 1998.

But it’s time. Now to give KeriBlog the proper packaging it deserves.

Then repeat the process 10 more times.

I have 12 in total.

KeriNetwork!

Choosing a new theme is a really big deal.  What if stuff breaks when you install it?  Are you sure the people building it will update it?  Because if not, or if they go out of business, you now have a big blog security problem.

Below is an email I wrote to my friend who’s helping me with the install.

It’s the thought process behind it all.

(new theme is by ThemeFuse)

If you need a sysadmin… or anything done in: C/C++, Python, Matlab/Symulink, html/php/css/javascript, then shell scripting like bash… or Matlab (!)… you want @NodeZero_Linux

Please don’t insult him by asking for anything free, and besides, his rates are already too low if you ask me ;)

Thanks buddy XO

ShmooCon 2012 in DC at the Washington Hilton

ShmooCon is the premiere East-coast annual hacker convention

This year’s bag.

Did you see this outside the lobby to the left Saturday afternoon?

A crane dropped what it was holding.

I procured a new laptop bag, sweet.

Espeically since this was the bag I was using.

ArcSight, nice, I’ve blogged about them before.

Attended some talks, the NFC one was interesting but over my head, and the HNN one was my favourite.

Not much to show you about the actual conference though – it’s impolite to wave your camera around recording things at such events. It’s nothing mysterious, just the nature of the industry.

Same at all the conferences, same as Defcon.

Which is why I’m extra proud of this video; I’m pretty sure I have one of the only videos in the world showing inside last year’s Defcon19.

Adding to that, you can imagine going online during these events, you best be prepared. This is ‘the best of the best’ gathered together. Which is why I didn’t let my laptop touch the hotel network and my MiFi went down.

There’s always someone better than you. And cleaning up after a compromise is never worth the couple days you missed internetting.

I can tell you though, about the couple that got engaged, congratulations you two!

And show you the cutest thing, look:

The bride-to-be had to pick her way inside to find the run, awww.

Then Saturday night it’s the annual party at ‘Heaven and Hell’.

Thanks for a great time, SchmooCon!

Great seeing your familiar face again, and great meeting your new one, TTYS
