Differences Between CDN & USA Part 3

Jan 31 2012

Here’s Part One and Part Two

Trailer parks are more popular in the States.

I had an Airstream dream for a while.

The lottery is pushed harder here.

You rarely see machines like this in Canada.

Kerosene is used to heat homes.

I’m definitely in a Southern US Walmart.

Note the little pink one far right.

Lastly.

Rode the Train Home & I Have Internet Again

Jan 29 2012

Cool, eh?!

It’s the sleeping car alley on an Amtrack train (Amtrack in USA = VIA in CDN).  I gotta say it’s much cheaper down here though; $50 will get you quite far.

Here’s what you can do if there’s two of you:

  1. each buy a ticket
  2. one of you upgrades to a little room for $100
  3. invite the other to ride with them

It was a 10 hour journey.

That’s a very long time to sit still.

It’s amazing really, everything you need in a 3.5′ x 7′ foot room.

Not being sarcastic… there’s people in Japan who live full time in spaces half this size. With everything they own. They make me and my trunk look like pansies.

Japan is on my travel list oh we are so going.

Hi hi.

The dining car.

Like I told the guys, “I can’t believe you served me this on a train”.

This was warm.

While on the topic of food, my next new blog is almost ready to be launched, hopefully by the week’s end.

It’s just a little blog, but the name, I know, HA.

Lastly, I’m back online.

Going online at a security conference is always risky.  And I don’t know if you’ve ever rebuilt a computer after it’s been compromised, but the time that takes far out-weighs missing a couple days of internetting.  More about that later over at SmartenUpInternet.com.

This is how I’ve been connecting since I arrived January 1… it’s called a MiFi, get it?

It’s a personal internet connection.  We use our phones as HotSpots in Canada to connect.  I love this thing.  I’m using it to blog right now.

Nice to be back online! Nice to be in the same place for two weeks.

I’ll leave you with this photo ahahahahah so many easy jokes.

Have a great Monday and start to your week.

Hi, I’m in DC Now

Jan 27 2012

As in Washington DC, capital of the United States.

You call it “DC”, not “Washington”. Or “the Triangle”, or “the District”.

Ha.

I’m here for ShmooCon 2012 – an annual East-coast hacker convention.

It’s held here where I’m also staying, the Washington Hilton. It smells really good here, like they mix the air with flowers.

Here’s some interesting history of the hotel:

Read about it here.

There’s a few conferences going on at the same time, look:

Ought to make for some great people-watching outside the hotel.

I landed last night, checked in, ate dinner, and then did laundry.

Being on the road for 2 weeks straight makes you have no socks.

Travel tip: if you need to do laundry on the road: look for a medium-level hotel; they’ll have machines. The higher end hotels will charge you to do it, plus this way is faster and more efficient.

I’m still having serious internet connections problems. This not having internet on my phone is tough.

I should be able to get that fixed earlier next week, on it.

TTYL, have a great Friday afternoon!

Morning from the Florida Keys

Jan 25 2012

I’m here for 2 nights to visit old friends, arrived last night.
Enjoyed dinner with them, then I put my head down and edited.

I’m pleased to report I have finished learning the new Final Cut YES. What that looks like:

I was dragging my heels on learning it, not gonna lie. Then Saturday night I bit the bullet, sat down, and got up 8 hours later; that’s what it takes.

Ever seen what video editing looks like? Here’s a fast video I made last year showing you.

After I rendered and uploaded my first video on it, I went for a walk outside.

Look how pleased I am with myself. Coming later: 48 Hours in South Beach and No Photos.

And also coming later…. my security show intro… OMFG I really must say.

Gotta run here, have a great day TTYL!
