Inside a Crash Test Dummy

They’re actually quite pricey:

Average dummy – $40 – 60,000
Dummy with data acquisition – $250,000
Side crash dummy – $660,000 (most expensive)

That’s why components are swapped out instead of the entire dummy.  Ribs break the most often, and are a $15,000 to replace.

Above is just the skeleton.

Below are kid dummies.

The aforementioned data acquisition and biofeedback devices. They track 40 data points in total.

It measures things like neck and brain injuries, head acceleration and velocity.

The one thing a dummy cannot simulate is how a human tenses up just before a crash.

Ideally you don’t do that, relaxed musles fare better upon impact; that’s why a drunk driver often sustains a crash better than a sober one.

Into the cabin he goes to be crashed.

The dummy is covered in grease paint to document what hit where.

This is his face hitting the steering wheel airbag.

Spotted at the IIHS during my recent trip with Subaru.

A 24 Hour Road Trip

That’s the State Farm autocross event on Wednesday, where I was encouraged to drive distracted.

Texting and no hands on the wheel.

It’s a screenshot from video, which I’ll edit over the weekend and upload it along with next week’s column about the event.

Then I packed it in and hopped on the road.

Behind Mad Max.

Saw some nature.

Not scared of that.

I like Jaguar’s navigation, it’s simple.

I like their F-TYPE even more, this is exactly the car in my dream 2-car mini-fleet.

Full post about it coming soon.

Ever read my column about the mystery of the checkered flag?

It’s one of my better ones, here.

Sitting quietly.

Thank you, I did.

And with that deadlines are done, blog done, email sort of done, and laptop is about to close after embedding this last photo.

Have a great weekend!

Use my New Mobile Site Like This Please

As you probably know, Google recently implemented a new rule that penalizes websites that are not optimized for mobile (for more info, read Casie’s post here.)

It wasn’t that I missed the deadline, I was early actually. It’s that on your phone, KeriBlog.com now looks like this.

From a colourful fun land to bland grey box time.

What do I always say – a sidebar is the essence of a blog – and now it’s gone. Despite this blog’s content being bright and cheerful, it looks opposite. Go search for something and get depressed too. And because mobile is quickly overtaking laptop, this paragraph was typed with my head hanging all low and sad.

It’s because I never once set a featured image for a post, all 2,000 posts, so no way can I fix this.

So please scroll to the bottom of my blog
and choose “Switch to Desktop Version”

Then instead of looking like the “Before” picture, it will look like this:

Blew Off the Last 24 Hours

Completely. Attended a cool event yesterday, then shirked all work, hopped in the car and road tripped instead.

Tell you about tomorrow after deadline day, for now it’s time for Thursday Night, best night of week! Hope yours has a lot of laughs TTYT
