I Hid the Logos, Can you Guess the Brand?

Apr 19 2015

You may be surprised, which is the point.

Here, look inside.

Note the vents atop the hood, might be a clue.

It’s a 2015 Buick Regal.

Available in manual and made in Canada, Buick is trying their guts out to reinvent themselves, and it’s working.

I attended its launch in October 2013, and still like it.

Read the review on Autonet.

Biggest Stick Family I’ve Ever Seen

Apr 19 2015

There’s 33.

Stick families are a terrible idea.

Wrote a column about that in December 2012.

Dealer Flyers must Bug Car Colour Designers

Apr 15 2015

* = paint colour names

Same colour – “Bright White” – across two different automakers.

But no way is that the real paint name, the one carefully chosen by the designers. Car colours are far more ridiculous, like: Bleached Alabaster with a hint of metallic Polar Obsidian.

But can’t print that, it’s both too long and unclear. So “bright white” lives.

Blog tag = car colour

Designing a Strong DRG and Graphic Signature

Apr 9 2015

Know how there’s those kind of cars, you see one from a distance, it’s features can’t be made out but you can just tell – it’s a Whatever.

Design Speak: this vehicle has a strong DownRoad Graphic,
its Graphic Signature is solid.

Speaking with Kevin George – Ford’s Exterior Design Manager – we learn about the DRG, and how when confronted with an advancing object, the mind goes through “3 reads”, and how that fits with vehicle design.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Everything described above – this “graphic signature” – is happening during the day, but the designers also have to pull this off at night.
