HUDs are Good

This tech debuted in fighter jets and has made its way down to our passenger vehicles.

It’s a holographic technology called HUD – Heads-Up Display.

Thought I’d dislike it – a busy cluster of information positioned directly in my field of vision? – but it’s fast to adopt and quite enjoyable. No dipping your eyes.

Find HUD in the Hyundai Genesis, Cadillacs, and Mazda does a great job.

Usually I condemn these new bleeding-edge technology features and discourage adoption, but Head-Up Displays are an exception, opt-in on a new car if possible.

The New Way to Steal a Car

A signal booster is the new shim.

The method exploits keyless entry, a once-luxury feature now found in entry-level cars.

I speak with Ted Harrington, co-founder of Independent Security Evaluators, a company that pioneered car hacking.

Very basically:

The Attack

Amplify the proximity radius, and now the key and car are talking when they shouldn’t be. Thief goes in, off he drives.

The Defence

Keep your key fob in a Faraday Cage (no signals can get in or go out)… do this by wrapping the fob in aluminum foil.

Sun Protective Clothing for Driving

Got so burnt in early June – in a coupe too – that I realized I can no longer drive without special protective UV clothing. So I investigated.

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating – 15 is good, but 50+ is what you want. And turns out China is really into this idea of protective-driving-clothing.
