Hey Pedestrians – Cars Hurt

Apr 17 2013

It’s baffling to see… someone walks into the street without looking, head down and distracted… why make the driver value their life more than they do?

Favourite Lines:

Rights are not an invisible force field of protection.

and

33% of the time, the pedestrian is at fault of the accident.

Driving Aids create Distracted Drivers

Apr 10 2013

I think these new features, the driving and safety aids, are creating complacent drivers.

And who ever checks if the sensor is clean and functioning, before climbing behind the wheel and relying on it?

Check the sensors!

Favourite line:

I worry these new features are masking just how dangerous an activity driving really is. And when the element of danger is removed, so are the consequences of a mistake.

The Anatomy of a Car’s Name

Apr 3 2013

Read it online on Autonet.ca.

Favourite line:

“Trim” is another word for features, finishings and options. To say a vehicle is “fully loaded” is to say the car has the highest trim level.

Piece together a vehicle’s name like this:

All-new > Year > Root Name > Size > Engine > Trim > Drivetrain

All-new 2013 Santa Fe XL 3.3L GDI V6 Limited AWD

I used morphology, ha!

Morphology – the identification, analysis and description of the structure of a language’s linguistics units.

Linguistics class paid off.  For the first time. Ever.

Tips for Filming in Your Car

Mar 27 2013

From camera angles and lighting, to making sure the audio is clear, otherwise the video is unwatchable.

Favourite line:

Lastly, if you really want to add in some dramatics, point the vents at your face, turn them on full blast and hello personal wind machine. Right?!

That’s a MonsterPod, I’ve used one since 2007. Sadly, they’ve been discontinued.

Securing Your Car in the City

Mar 20 2013

Defend against 2 types of attacks when parking your car in an urban environment.

(Last line reads: because unless the car is stolen out of your driveway, the thief now knows where you live and where you’re not.

Favourite line:

Securing your car isn’t so much about making it theft-proof (that’s impossible); it’s more about making it invisible and undesirable.

Above – where this week’s column came from.

24 Hours readers – you’ve met me through cars, but as a hobby around here, I blog about security, mostly online.
