Speeding Advice from the Police

Nov 20 2013

Speaking with Constable Stibbe, the toughest enforcer on the team. Last year he wrote over 5,000 speeding tickets, or 20/day.

He details how to avoid a ticket, and what to do if you get pulled over.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Even the “toughest enforcer” waves people on. As Stibbe says, “hey, everyone has the occasional bad day.”

A 2-part mini-series on speeding.

Read the other one, from the fight-the-ticket perspective, here.

Canadians Dominate the Auto Industry

Nov 13 2013

Canadians dominate the auto industry – but we’re pretty quiet about it – which is why this week I’d like to do some bragging, politely.

I’m singling out Nissan, BMW, GM, Chrysler, Ford and Toyota, then the auto journalists too.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

The ending – last 3 paragraphs:

And then there’s the Canadian auto journalists – and I think this is indicative of our culture – we are consistently booked into one of two waves…

Donating Your Organs

Nov 6 2013

Register at the MTO, either in person or online. You must be at least 16 years old.

There are 8 donation possibilities: kidneys, heart, eyes, bone, liver, lungs, skin and pancreas.

1 donor can save up to 8 lives, and affect 75 others.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Kidneys top the list of most-wanted, and the most common opt-outs are eyes and skin.

What’s a VIN Number

Oct 30 2013

VIN Number  – a 17-character Vehicle Identification Number, unique to the vehicle its attached to. Above is my ’99 Jetta.

It’s a bit like reading a cipher – see 3rd paragraph for a breakdown.

Find VINs on the engine, seats, door jams, and mounted on the driver’s side of the dash.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Always run your own VIN check before buying; a $50 purchase to verify one worth thousands is a good investment.

Check one here – CarProof.com

Storing a Car

Oct 23 2013

Protect your second biggest investment from the enemy – moisture.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Write a note to your future self, listing the changes you made, and tape it to the steering wheel.
