I Didn’t Write This

Jul 19 2015

It’s from today’s Toronto Sun. Probably the page builder wasn’t having the best day is all.

Blogging this because technically there’s now plagiarism attached to my name, so this is a record it was accidental.

David Miller wrote it, you’ve met before, he has good jokes.  Read it on Autonet here.

The New Way to Steal a Car

Jul 15 2015

A signal booster is the new shim.

The method exploits keyless entry, a once-luxury feature now found in entry-level cars.

I speak with Ted Harrington, co-founder of Independent Security Evaluators, a company that pioneered car hacking.

Very basically:

The Attack

Amplify the proximity radius, and now the key and car are talking when they shouldn’t be. Thief goes in, off he drives.

The Defence

Keep your key fob in a Faraday Cage (no signals can get in or go out)… do this by wrapping the fob in aluminum foil.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Pretty geeky, and probably beyond the average criminal, right? The trouble is that the online black market is massive and lucrative.

Sun Protective Clothing for Driving

Jun 29 2015

Got so burnt in early June – in a coupe too – that I realized I can no longer drive without special protective UV clothing.  So I investigated.

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating – 15 is good, but 50+ is what you want. And turns out China is really into this idea of protective-driving-clothing.

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Use the search term “summer driving clothing” and click on results from DHGate or AliExpress, two of China’s largest online retailers. Below are “arm mittens.”

I’m going to order the above hat, gloves and shawl, really.

(update: I now own the hat)

My Pet Peeves on New Cars

Jun 24 2015

I can’t find the logic behind the following features. Especially because a small something, or absence of something, can have a big negative affect on the driving experience.

Here’s my list of the little things that bug me the most. Tweet or email me yours!

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

To the automakers who have omitted a volume dial – no, the steering wheel volume button is not a reasonable replacement.

That SOS button has its own post, here.

So does the chrome interior touches, here.

More Road Etiquette, Please

Jun 17 2015

I set out to investigate a trend of ticketing slow left lane drivers, but the story morphed into one about the road manners.

Or as Officer Stibbe corrects me, “no Keri, it’s about lack thereof.”

Read it online at Autonet.

Favourite line:

Last 3 paragraphs, Stibbe’s one-liner, I burst out laughing.

You’ve met Officer Stibbe before, in the column – So you Got Pulled Over for Speeding
